Speed memorization for solving Rubik's cubes blindfolded
This page is all about my methods for memorizing various size Rubik's cubes for the purpose of solving them blindfolded. I started using the letter pair images method April 2006 and right now I memorize the 4x4x4 in around 3 minutes on average, and the 5x5x5 in around 8 minutes on average. I learned the letter pair 1 syllable word method December 2007 for use on corners and 3x3x3 edges. I learned about the letter pair methods in general after much input from J. Bernett Orlando and his father John Louis, Simon Orton, Ben Pridmore, Boris Konrad, and other help from the people at the Memory Sports Yahoo! Group, so many thanks to all those who led me to this method for fast memorization.
Before I start with the two methods I'd especially like to thank Dror Vomberg and Daniel Beyer. Thanks to Dror for inspiring me to learn 3x3x3 blindfolded at the 2003 Rubik's Worlds and to learn the bigger cubes blindfolded at the 2005 Rubik's Worlds. Thanks to Daniel for really pushing me to improve my method in all its aspects. Without our team work on improving both our memorizing and our solving methods I don't think I would have gotten as interested in blindfolded solving as I did. I also want to thank Dror, Stefan Pochmann, Daniel Beyer, and Marcus Stuhr for inspiring me to speed up my blindfolded solving for the larger cubes.
I use two different methods to memorize various sized Rubik's cubes, both of which are based on the idea of having prepared lists of images or words that are formed by the combination of two letters. Each sticker on the cube has a letter associated with it, and I memorize the cube in sticker cycles, similar to Stefan Pochmann's method. I take two pieces in the cycle and use their corresponding letters to make either an image or a word. For letter pair images I place the images into a prepared journey with predetermined stops along the way. For the letter pair words/sounds I simply remember the sounds of the words I hear.
