Letter pair images
The Method:
I use a journey style method for memorizing the larger cubes, where I place images into a prepared journey location. Each journey is a prepared list of mental locations, and I walk through from one place to the next and place objects in each location. For example one of my journeys is a walk through the neighborhood in which I grew up, and I have 26 prepared locations there. I also have journeys through my old college campus, and the route I drive to get to the local coffee shop I go to. You can use any scenery you want in your journey.

The objects I place into the journey locations are made up of pairs of letters. I have prepared an image for every possible combination of the letters used on the cube. I letter the pieces on the cube in a certain pattern, just to make it easy to recall which is which. I won't give my lettering, just because I think it is important to come up with one of your own. It's better to use a pattern you like, and one that you are sure you can remember well.

Ok so each center piece location has a letter name. So for example the location lbU is the letter A for the centers on a 4x4x4 and 5x5x5. The location bmU is also the letter A for the centers on a 5x5x5. The edge at uBL for both the 4x4x4 and 5x5x5 is also the letter A for me.

When memorizing I start at an edge or center and take that location's letter. This first location is given the image of a famous person. This is because the first piece in a cycle is always the first piece in each 3 cycle performed to solve that entire cycle. Whenever I see one of these single letter images (famous people) I know it is either the start or end of a cycle.

For the other pieces I always group two pieces together into one image. So say the start of my centers cycle is lbU->ulF->ufR, then I convert those to letters and I get A->E->I. I take the first piece of the cycle (A) and use my famous person for the letter A, which is Dan Aykroyd. I then group E and I together to EI and use my image for EI, which is an eskimo. I then imagine Dan Aykroyd interacting with an eskimo somehow. Maybe they are shaking hands, or Dan is hugging the eskimo, or tackling him, etc.. I always place three images per location, and this can include a combination of letter pair images and single letter images. So an example of my first journey location could be Dan Aykroyd pushes an eskimo into the open door of a UFO, which then takes off into the sky. This would represent the letter A->E->I->U->F which represents the pieces in the following cycle (lbU->luF->ufR->lbD->urF). So I have memorized the first 5 pieces of my centers cycle using the image of Dan Aykroyd pushing an eskimo into the open door of a UFO. Pretty cool huh?

Ok, so now that you have an idea of what I am doing, here are all the images I use. The first group are my single letter images, and the second group are all my letter pair images. Good luck, and have fun with your big cube BLD'ing!

Single letters (famous people):

A Dan Aykroyd B Orlando Bloom C Jim Carrey D Johnny Depp E Carmen Electra F Chris Farley G Tom Green H Adolf Hitler I Eddy Izzard J Michael Jordon K Chris Katan L Lindsay Lohan M Dan Marino N Chuck Norris O Ozzy Osbourne P Richard Pryor Q Queen R Denise Richards S Will Smith T Donald Trump U Uma Thurman V Jean Claude van Damme W George W. Bush X Malcolm X
