Ton's Rubik's Puzzle Building News Nr 2          16 - Jan 2004

To complete the process of  making a Rubik's Studio Speedcube, I got some ideas inspired by Simon Page how to make a 3x3x3 Speedcube. The improvement is that the center cubie wear will be minimum. If you go a used speedcube just look at the center cube the hole is bigger, and on the inside the spring has scratch down in the plastic. So with the washer and the screw filled the wear is minimized.

I have a unique type of Rubik's cube for trade, an arched Rubik's Cube, it is a collectible, this clone typed Rubik's cube came in a white cardboard box in the early 1980. David Allen used this type of cube for his speedcubing during the WC2003. As collectible this type is very rare, as for speedcubing I see little difference compared to a Wonderful puzzler clone cube.

Recently there are at least three sources that claims a working concept for cubes bigger as a 6x6x6. A concept claim from prof.Zoran Kovacevic and  Konstantinos Verdes and Chris Witham. Could they be build? Claims and concept are nice, but to convince any production company I guess they want to see a working prototype. Building an actual puzzles reveals the build processes, assembly and stability of a puzzle. For cubes bigger as 7x7x7, there is a problem with with a overhanging corner pieces if we turn an outer layer 45 degrees, for a cube shape 7x7x7 with all the same size cubies.  To over come this problem Max Caley already posted a solution for this on the Twisty forum (see picture). If you look closely you notice that the outer cubies are bigger as the inner cubies. For the 6x6x6 there exist already working prototypes one by Wayne Johnson and one from Laurent Blanc. So at least we know a 6x6x6 is possible and for a 7x7x7 in a cube shape is feasible. Lets wait and see how long we have to wait so we can buy a 6x6x6 and see a working 7x7x7.

Some news from last year, Tony Fisher bought 24 4x4x4 Rubik's Master Cubes form me, let's wait and see what he will make of them. On the cube day 2003 day in 2003, Tony made some nice cube modifications. The 4x4x5 is a nice puzzle, it has some nice puzzle challenges. I have a personal best time of for the 4x4x5 of 7 minutes 53.95 seconds. Some bad news for me, after the world championship I was very busy training and making speedcubes. After a while I developed what is called Carpal tunnel syndrome (thumb/wrist nerve problems) but you might find in history books the term 'Cubist's Thumb' or 'Rubik's Wrist' -Cubic Circular 1 page 3. With me this was mainly caused because of making prepared speedcube's one a week, for this it is required that you need force break in a new cube and set the cube stiff.
